Cops Nab Evader Two Weeks after Wild Chase

Faustino Hernandez was arrested in his home on Tuesday afternoon.

It turns out that hiding from the police in your own home is not a viable strategy for staying out of jail. That was the lesson learned by Faustino Hernandez Vazquez on Tuesday afternoon.

Hernandez Vazquez was arrested by CHP officers at his Live Oak home on Alice Street at 2:10 p.m., 12 days after leading police on a spirited chase through much of Santa Cruz.

On Oct. 4, a CHP officer tried to stop Hernandez Vazquez for speeding on Highway 17, but he took off through downtown Santa Cruz and eventually ditched his car on North Branciforte Street. He ran on foot, changed his shirt in a ravine, and wasn't seen again until his arrest on Oct. 16.

According to Officer Sarah Jackson, Hernandez Vazquez already had an extensive criminal history that includes methamphetamine abuse, driving with a license suspended for prior DUIs, felony reckless evading, resisting arrest, trespass, and misdemeanor hit and run.

He was booked into jail this week for felony reckless evading with his bail set at $75,000.
