Monterey Diving Accident Claims Santa Cruz Man

The 66-year-old was one of two SCUBA divers who had difficulties surfacing; the other diver recovered.

A Santa Cruz man died while SCUBA diving off the Monterey coast Monday, the Monterey County Coroner's Office confirmed.

David Jones, 66, was diving at Stillwater Cove near Pebble Beach around 11:15 a.m. when he went into distress. Crew on the dive boat Beach Hopper pulled Jones from the water, began performing CPR and called for assistance from the Monterey Fire Department, according to the Coroners' Office.

The Fire Boat responded to bring Jones to shore. He was taken by ambulance to the Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula where he was later declared dead, according to the Coroner's Office.

According to KSBW, Jones was one of two divers who were rescued Monday. The second diver, a woman, had jumped from the same dive boat into an area called Horseshoe Reef, a feature about 90 feet below the surface and a mile south of Pescadero Point.

Both divers had trouble getting back to the surface, the TV station reported. The rescue boat took both to shore; the woman recovered.

Two divers also died at Breakwater Cove in June.
