DNA Evidence Helps Santa Cruz Police Find Alleged Vandal who Slashed Tires

Daniel O'Reilly was arrested by the Sheriff's office for possession of a dangerous weapon; Santa Cruz Police already had him identifed as the vandal who slashed tires in the west side.

Santa Cruz Police arrested Daniel O'Reilly, 31, a transient for allegedly slashing the the tires of 56 cars and trucks on the Westside July 30 after linking him to the crime by DNA evidence.

At least three of the cars had swastikas carved into them in the crime that occurred sometime between 11 p.m. July 29 and 1 a.m. July 30.

Police sent evidence from the scene to the state's Department of Justice criminal lab and got a $100,000 warrant based on that.

When O'Reilly was arrested on Monday by Sheriff's deputies for other charges, including a weapons charge, Santa Cruz Police added a $100,000 arrest warrant for him.
