Suspected Drive-By Shooter Arrested Downtown

Fast work by police, a school officer and witnesses led police to a suspected shooter with a gun.

A 20-year-old Santa Cruz man was arrested Friday morning with a Glock model 17 handgun after witnesses reported shots fired at a pair of men walking on Laurel Street between downtown and Santa Cruz High School at 9:10 a.m.

Witnesses phone police after seeing shots fired from a black Volkswagon Jetta after an argument between two men and the driver. Within two minutes of the call Officer Steve Pendleton, the School Resource Officer at Santa Cruz High spotted the car and began following it.

They ended up at the 100 block of Center Street – right outside the Santa Cruz Police Department – and arrested a suspect.

He was identified as Jonah Namauu, 20, of Santa Cruz, who was taken to Santa Cruz County Jail on suspicion of four counts of firing a gun from a car near a school.

The two victims were found in an apartment but weren't cooperating with police.
