DUI Checkpoints Start Tonight
Police and CHP will be out in force, starting at 9 p.m. at Ocean and Water streets.
The Santa Cruz police and California Highway Patrol offices will stop drivers for signs of intoxication at various times and places throughout the weekend.
The first checkpoint will be at 9 p.m. Friday at Ocean and Water streets.
The purpose of the checkpoints are to discourage drunken driving, according to a statement from the CHP. In addition, police "saturation patrols" will be on the watch for drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The funding for the checkpoints was made available by an Office of Traffic Safety grant called the Impaired Driving Enforcement and Apprehension grant.
CHP reminds the motoring public to designate a driver if they happen to allow alcohol to be a part of their evening. And remember to wear your seatbelt.
