Early Morning Fire, Water Damage at Palomar Hotel

Estimated loss of $5,000; estimated save by sprinkler system, $15 million

Santa Cruz firefighters responding to a report of a fire on the fifth floor of the Palomar Hotel at 1344 Pacific Ave., found the sprinkler system had saved the building.

Four engines and 15 firefighters responded to the blaze, which resulted in a loss of $5,000 of contents to the room. Water also damaged rooms and businesses below.

The Fire Department reported potential loss of $15 million if the blaze hadn't been so quickly extingushed.
