Fire Damages Santa Cruz Self Storage on Walnut Avenue

Damage estimated at $75,000, officials said.

Fire damaged several self-storage units at a facility in Santa Cruz early this morning, the fire department reported.

At around 2:55 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of heavy smoke coming from the second story of a 24-unit building at Santa Cruz Self Storage, located at 203 Walnut Ave., according to the Santa Cruz Fire Department.

Crews quickly extinguished the blaze but were forced to open the roof to relieve smoke and heat throughout the upper floor, fire officials said.

Flames did not spread to other buildings at the facility. Smoke and fire caused heavy damage to the structure and several units inside, according to the fire department.

An initial investigation revealed that the cause the fire appeared to be discarded smoking material, officials said. Damage to the structure was estimated at $75,000.
