Fire on Park Place Displaces 10 Residents in Santa Cruz

Firefighters have contained a structure fire that destroyed a shed and damaged two residential buildings this morning in Santa Cruz.

Firefighters responded at 1:42 a.m. to a report of a structure fire at a residence in the 100 block of Park Place and found a shed fully engulfed in flames and two apartment buildings partially on fire, according to the Santa Cruz Fire Department.

Firefighters said one of the homes had mainly exterior damage, but a second home had significant interior damage from the fire.

A third unit sustained smoke damage. The shed was a total loss. Investigators said the fire started outside and between the two buildings.

Two people were evacuated from one of the apartments by firefighters. There were no reports of injuries, but firefighters said a pet was killed in the blaze.

The fire displaced 10 people, according to the fire department. The American Red Cross is providing the displaced residents with temporary shelter.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
