Friday Night Blaze Quickly Contained

Soquel Avenue apartment fire not as serious as initially believed.

Firefighters from multiple agencies extinguished a fire at an apartment in Santa Cruz County Friday, according to the Santa Cruz County Central Fire Protection District.

The fire district received calls of a fire at 2500 Soquel Drive at 10:44 p.m., and district personnel arrived to find smoke coming from the sliding glass door of Apartment No. 11 in Building 100 of the complex. Initially, firefighters thought the fire had spread to a neighboring apartment and called for assistance from nearby fire departments in Santa Cruz and Aptos.

Deputies from the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office also responded and assisted in evacuating residents from neighboring apartments and directing traffic. Firefighters quickly contained the fire to one apartment and extinguished it within 15 minutes.
