Injured Bicyclist Arrested for DUI

A Sunnyvale man riding a bicycle on East Cliff Drive was struck by a car, and later arrested for allegedly bicycling under the influence of alcohol.

Vararat Sangwornrachasab, 31, of Santa Cruz, told police he was driving on East Cliff Drive near Blackpoint Lane Saturdy at 8:15 a.m., when a bicyclist veered off the bike path and into his lane and was struck by his 2006 Ford Escape.

The bicyclist, Jesus Cervantes, 38, was seriously injured and taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose for treatment. Sangwornrachasab was not injured.

California Highway Patrol officers said Cervantes was under the influence of alcohol – a crime on a bicycle equal to driving a car – and arrested him.
