Major Damage Averted in Westside House Fire

Santa Cruz city and UCSC fire departments join forces to control fire and limit property loss.

Fire alarms installed in a million-dollar home on the Westside alerted its occupants to a fire, which was contained to a single room Monday morning.

Four fire engines and a truck, along with 20 firefighters, were called to the fire at 11:35 a.m. Monday at the corner of National and Nevada streets.

The firefighters encountered a moderate amount of smoke coming from the third story of the home, at 158 National St. Upon investigation, they found a fire in a closet, and the firefighters were able to contain the fire to the bedroom, thus limiting the amount of property damage caused by fire, smoke and water.
