Man, 76, Hit by Bus in Critical Condition

 A 76-year-old man is in critical condition today after he was hit by a bus in downtown Santa Cruz on Monday afternoon, a Santa Cruz police lieutenant said.

The collision, which involved a Santa Cruz Metro bus, was reported at 1:42 p.m. on Pacific Avenue at Cathcart Street. The man suffered major injuries to his legs, police Lt. Dan Flippo said.

  He was initially taken to Dominican Hospital in unincorporated Santa Cruz before he was flown to a trauma center in Santa Clara County where he remains today, Flippo said.

No passengers were on the bus at the time of the accident, and the bus driver is cooperating with police, police said.

The circumstances of the collision remain under investigation. The incident shut down the intersection for about three and half hours.
