Man Arrested for Allegedly Raping Sleeping Woman

They met in Santa Cruz and went home to Aptos.

Santa Cruz deputies arrested a man on suspicion of raping an unconscious woman Friday, sheriff's officials said.

Charles Steppes Jr., 29, of Monterey is suspected of raping a 23-year-old woman while she slept, officials said.

The woman met Steppes on March 13 while out with friends in Santa Cruz. She and Steppes went to a home in Aptos, where the woman fell asleep. The woman woke while Steppes was allegedly sexually assaulting her, officials said.

Steppes was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail, and bail was set for $50,000, officials said.
