Missing Boater Found Dead Off Santa Cruz Coast

Man left Half Moon Bay last week. He was found Tuesday.

A 70-year-old man was found dead in a boat about 20 miles southwest of Santa Cruz on Tuesday, hours after he was reported missing.

The man's name has not been released. He left Half Moon Bay aboard Sunrise, a 40-foot fishing vessel, on July 25, according to U.S. Coast Guard officials. He was reported "overdue" about 1 p.m. Tuesday. Rescuers found him a few hours later.

A rescue swimmer found the man's body after being lowered onto the boat from an MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter out of Air Station San Francisco, according to the Coast Guard. A 47-foot motor life boat crew from Station Monterey also responded.

The life boat crew will return the fishing boat and the man's body to Santa Cruz, where they will be turned over to authorities, according to the Coast Guard.
