Monday Morning Arana Gulch Fire Suspected Arson

Due to the location and the weather, firefighters think the fire in Arana Gulch early Monday morning was intentionally set.

Santa Cruz Fire Department was dispatched early Monday morning to reports of a fire in the area behind Walgreens on Soquel Avenue.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find a wildland fire burning in Arana Gulch, according to the Santa Cruz Fire Department.

Santa Cruz Fire called for backup from Central Fire to help put out the 2.5 acre fire. They contained the fire to the grassy area of Arana Gulch, close to the upper harbor access path.

17 firefighters, 4 engines and 1 water tender were needed to control the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but because of the location and foggy weather, it is considered to have been intentionally set.
