New Year's Eve Police Crackdown Nets 81 Citations, 20 Arrests

As promised, Santa Cruz Police kept the downtown safe and clean New Years Eve, citing 57 for alcohol violations, 5 for public urination and 39 for other code violations.

If you were arrested or cited downtown Tuesday night, you were triply unhappy. Fines jumped three times New Year's Eve, from hundreds of dollars to near thousands.

Police, at full force, arrested 17 people for intoxication on alcohol and one on narcotics. They cited 37 people for drinking in public and 5 for public urination, some 31 who got tripled fined.

They also cited 39 people for breaking municipal traffic and other codes for a grand total of 81 citations.

Police said 4,500 people celebrated at the Town Clock at midnight, down from 7,000 a year earlier. Temperatures were in the high 30s at midnight. Police responded to 222 calls for service overnight.
