Pedestrian Killed in Santa Cruz Crosswalk Friday Identified

The victim was Bruce Picano, 49, of Santa Cruz.

A pedestrian struck in a crosswalk and killed in Santa Cruz Wednesday night has been identified as 49-year-old Santa Cruz resident Bruce Picano, according to police.

Picano was struck at about 10:14 p.m. Wednesday by a northbound vehicle as he crossed Mission Street near King Street, according to Santa Cruz Police Department Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark.

He was taken to Dominican Hospital following the collision and died shortly after.

Picano had just left an alcohol near the intersection of Mission and King and was crossing from south to north when he was struck in the northbound lanes by a black 2007 Nissan Maxima driven by a 19-year-old Santa Cruz resident, Clark said.

Picano was in the crosswalk at the time he was struck.

The crosswalk is equipped with overhead pedestrian warning lights and signs but the lights have to be activated manually, and it is unclear if they were activated prior to the collision, Clark said.

The driver of the vehicle does not appear to have been speeding or driving recklessly, and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the collision, Clark said.

The driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with investigators, Clark said.
Mission Street remained closed for approximately four hours while investigators processed the scene for evidence.

Investigators said they will continue to follow up with evidence collection and analysis before a final determination of cause and fault are established.

An autopsy is pending for Picano.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or either involved party in the hours prior to the collision is encouraged to contact the Santa Cruz Police Department Traffic Unit at (831) 420-5862.
