Police Arrest Man, Find Restaurant Supplies at Bus Stop

Sleeping on a bench with knives and $2,000 worth of alcohol led to a trip to jail.

A Santa Cruz police officer who stopped to talk to a man sleeping at a bus stop Monday at 10 a.m. near Cowell Beach spotted a box filled with expensive knives, kitchen implements and alcohol bottles next to him.

The officer arrested the man, Christopher Holmes, for public intoxication and called restaurants in the area to see if they were missing anything.

After an hour, someone from a restaurant on the 700 block of Front Street called police to report a burglary.

The restaurant was reunited with its tools and $2,000 worth of alcohol. Holmes, 47, was reunited with a room and free meals in the Santa Cruz County Jail. A possession of stolen property charge was added to his charge for public intoxication.
