Police: Los Gatos Bike-Car Wreck Reminder of Right-of-Way Violation

Los Gatos-Monte Sereno police are urging motorists to watch out for bicyclists.

A bicyclist vs. car accident early this month on Blossom Hill Road is a perfect reminder to motorists of right-of-way violations made when turning into a rider's path, Los Gatos-Monte Sereno police said this week.

On July 4, at 9:50 a.m., Los Gatos resident Dale Ferrerio was riding his bicycle westbound on Blossom Hill Road, near , when Santa Cruz resident Wayne Kwang Kim, driving eastbound on Blossom Hill Road, made a left-hand-turn into the park's driveway striking Ferrerio, according to police.

The turn took place in front of Ferrerio, which caused him to crash into Kwang Kim's beige Honda Accord, said Los Gatos-Monte Sereno police Sgt. Kerry Harris.

Ferrerio suffered moderate injuries and was treated and released at the scene, Harris said. He declined to be transported to the hospital, he added.

It was determined that the motorist was at fault for violating the bicyclist's right of way, Harris said.

"We urge motorists to drive with caution and be watchful for bicyclists because this sort of right-of-way violation happens far too often," Harris noted.

I recently took an online traffic school course (me speeding? Impossible!!) and I was so glad I did. I learned so much and I was embarrassed that I assumed so many things when I am on the road. I am much more careful now when I drive. Of course, now I get irritated when I see other drivers pull the same stunts I was doing just a few weeks ago. EVERYONE should take a online TRAFFIC school course. It is very enlightening. You'll be surprised!!

Hey this happens. But I have noticed that people just don't care. There always in a hurry to go no where! They shoot out from their parking places without even looking. I've seen a lot of this in Kings CT. Los Gatos. What's the rush? And why are people not looking both, all ways? It's just too sad.

I called the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition today and left a voice message and sent an email seeking comment or encouraging one of its representatives to address some of the comments made here about bicycle safety. Hopefully someone will jump in on this conversation tomorrow and tell us if these incidents are on the increase.

i don't know why those cyclists have to dress up as space men and ride in big packs on kennedy road.

This is exactly the same type of crash that seriously injured Professor Saghari on Las Gatos Blvd last year: http://losgatos.patch.com/articles/los-gatos-cyclist-s-life-forever-changed In both cases, the bicyclist was going straight in the bike lane. An oncoming car cuts left into the bicyclist. Maybe the turning car saw another car coming and tried to speed through the intersection, but they don't look for bicyclists or pedestrians that have the right of way. The car is going so much faster that the bicyclists or pedestrian have no chance to get out of the way. Drivers need to learn to slow down and not proceed unless they can clearly see that they have room all the way across the intersection.
