A cyclist was struck and killed in Santa Cruz late Friday night by a driver who fled the scene, the California Highway Patrol is reporting.

A 65-year-old Santa Cruz man was riding his bicycle east in the westbound bike lane on Soquel Drive west of North Rodeo Gulch around 11:55 p.m. when he lost control of the bike and fell into lanes of traffic, according to the CHP.

CHP officials say a driver heading west on Soquel Drive struck the man and fled the scene.

The bicyclist was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, where he died from his injuries.

Officials said a damaged Mazda hubcap was found at the scene of the deadly collision.

The suspect car is believed to be a mid-2000s Mazda sedan that is now missing a hubcap.

The CHP is seeking witnesses to the collision and is urging anyone who saw the crash or has information to call the CHP Santa Cruz Area office at (831) 796-2160.
