Santa Cruz Firefighters Rescue Woman Who Fell Off Cliff Friday Night

Three Santa Cruz Fire Department rescue swimmers braved tough surf Friday night to save the life of a woman who fell off a cliff at West Cliff Drive and Merced.

The woman fell in at 7:42 and landed 30 feet below the cliff. The swimmers protected her and guided her to a basket that pulled her up to the street in a process that took 30 minutes. Firefighters on three engines and a ladder truck were there to help. She was badly injured, treated first at Dominican and then flown to a trauma center.

The woman was visiting Santa Cruz and walked too close to the cliff, she told firefighters.
