Santa Cruz Law Enforcement Carries the Torch for Special Olympics

A spirit of festivity and hard work punctuated the run from Watsonville, through Santa Cruz and over to Scotts Valley

Sheriff's deputies, police officers and even district attorneys converged on the Santa Cruz Courthouse Wednesday afternoon to pick up the Special Olympics torch on its way from Los Angeles to Davis in time for the games June 24.

"It felt great," said Lt. Fred Plageman, who ran for three miles, as the torch passed along the coast, by the Yacht Harbor and through downtown Santa Cruz.

Added deputy Cathy Bramanti: "You build up your arms. It's heavy."

"Five pounds exactly," said Shaun Saffen, one of the athletes, who joined the run.

Temperatures were comfortable along the coast, in the 70s, but the runners were worried about it heating up over 90 in Scotts Valley.
