Santa Cruz Man Arrested For Allegedly Driving Car Stolen In Home Burglary

A 22-year-old Santa Cruz man was arrested for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle near Marina in Monterey County on Friday morning, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.

Agents from the Multi-Agency Detail against Commercial Auto Theft located the stolen 2011 Toyota Matrix around 10:30 a.m., sheriff's officials said.

Investigators determined that the Matrix was stolen out of Santa Cruz during a home burglary in March, said the sheriff's office.

The agents conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle as it exited state Highway 1 onto Del Monte Boulevard, according to the sheriff's office.

The vehicle then turned on Charles Benson Road about a mile away from the freeway where the driver yielded to the agents, sheriff's officials said.

Officers conducted a high-risk enforcement stop on the vehicle at a Waste Management landfill in Marina that was temporarily locked down, according to the sheriff's office.

Santa Cruz resident Genaro Ponce was arrested and booked into county jail on suspicion of auto theft.

A woman and three small children were in the vehicle with Ponce and were released at the scene, sheriff's officials said.

The agents coordinated with the sheriff's office and Marina Police Department to conduct the traffic stop.
