Santa Cruz Police Arrest Man for Allegedly Stealing Giant Saw from Motel Parking Lot

With help from motel footage and a fast response, Santa Cruz Police arrested a man for allegedly stealing a giant $600 Chop Saw from a truck belonging to a construction company owner.

The saw was stolen from the back of a truck parked at the Days Inn at 600 Riverside Ave. after midnight Tuesday.  Officer Karina Cece˜a reviewed surveillance tape from the motel and spotted a man getting out of his truck, donning a yellow construction helmet and climbing into the victim's truck and taking the saw.

At 9 p.m., Cece˜a was talking to fellow officer Alec Ganzel about another case with a similar truck involved. They connected information and found the suspect's truck at Branciforte Avenue and Belvedere Terrace with two doors open and two people standing there.

One of the men, Kyle Franks, 27, of Felton, matched the description of the man in the video. The Chop Saw was in the back of the truck, as was the yellow helmet.

He was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property, possession of heroin and theft. He was released on his own recognizance for a previous crime.
