Santa Cruz Police Investigating Man Who Lived With Corpse

Neighbors reported a bad smell and police arrested a 63-year-old man on a parole violation

Santa Cruz Police arrested I. John Clauer, 63, of the 1100 block of East Cliff Drive Tuesday after they were called to his apartment to investigate a bad smell.

Officers found the decomposing body of a 30-year-old woman at the home with Clauer. The body, they said, had been decomposing for several days.

The cause of death is under investigation and so is the fact that Clauer didn't report the death to police. Clauer, who is on parole for selling marijuana to a juvenile under 14, was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail.

"This is the weirdest case I've seen," said Deputy Chief Steve Clark. "And I've been here 25 years."

Clark said police are investigating the death as a homicide and would release the name of the victim after her next of kin has been notified. Clark said she had a criminal record, as did Clauer. However, he said, if the medical examiner comes back with a report that indicates a natural death, they will approach it with other charges, such as failure to report the death to police.

Clauer has a history of convictions for drug possession, burglary and drug sales, Clark said.  Clauer talked to police while waiting for his attorney, and while officers couldn't ask him questions, they got what they said were conflicting accounts of the death.

"He is either the suspect in a homicide or his behavior in not reporting the death is suspicious," said Clark. "The smell was so bad it prompted a call from neighbors."

The first thing that came to my mind that maybe he is a necrophiliac. Unless he has severe mental problems and/or under the influence of some pretty powerful drugs, I cannot think of any other reason why someone would do that and I have taken into account that he has a track record and maybe got paranoid with the law but we all know and especially this man that being honest and upfront with the law is always the best thing to do because the law will win every time.

Maybe he was in love with her, she died (under what circumstances we don't know), and he just couldn't let go. Love is forever! Pmanso

No more arguments

the law will win every time. OJ Simpson trial ?
rober t April 29, 2011 at 02:15 AM
Not advocating for his behaviore, whatever they were. Sure he needs some medical/mental health help. However why judge the man. While under the influence of a mind altering substance the thought process is dictated by influences. Have you drank and had sex. Sure, and you were under the impression that you were really putting your shot down. have you taken medications and felt as though the cold went away when you only treated the symptoms. procproc

Escalonz, in response to your comment "the law will win every time. OJ Simpson trial ?". Perhaps I forgot to mention that yes, the law will win everytime unless you have money. That about sums it up. O.J. was guilty as sin in my opinion but he had money. I have also seen innocent people without money go to jail. Corrupted Government for sure.

THERE ARE A LOT OF SICK PEOPLE IN THE WORLD. MORE THAN EVER IT SEEMS. SINCE RELIGION HAS BEEN TAKEN OUR OF SCHOOLS, THERE ARE MORE PERVERTS THAN EVER BEFORE. TO ALL PARENTS: DON'T SEND YOUR TEENS OFF TO COLLEGE AWAY FROM HOME. THEY NEED YOUR PROTECTION. THE WORLD IS WAY TOO DANGEROUS.
Cindy April 29, 2011 at 02:18 AM
Well, that sure puts that t-shirt "keep Santa Cruz Weird" in a new light.
virka April 29, 2011 at 02:20 AM
Julie, this evil has been going on for a long time even before they decided to take religion out of the schools. The evil in the world in only escalating and becoming more rampant now as we are in the end times. The Book of Revelations is a great prophecy and I realize that is a totally different subject and perhaps for a different room and time. If I had kids, I would be extremely over-protective in todays' world that is for sure .

If Clauer could stand the smell, then there's no telling if there's any more bodies decomposing. Well, then I guess prison would smell like a bed of roses, because that's where he's going to be until he decompose, as you get older you get wiser in his case he was just left out
roger April 29, 2011 at 02:25 AM
It has come to my attention from reliable sourse that this man was using her dead body for sex. She could not fight back so he had his way with her. The evidence is in about this.
Olga April 29, 2011 at 02:31 AM
Could also be he had no money.....remember folks....we live in a messed up society/economy. There have been articles similar to these, in which, people are so poor they're just keeping the bodies of their loved one(s). They cant afford cremation, burial, etc., I cant tell whther to laugh or not at Santa Cruz cops:"....even if her a autopsy returns natural causes. He will be charged with failure to report a death to police." Are they that slow with crime? Sounds likes a misdemeanor to me....more, I thank G-d everyday I am NOT a Cali-korn-nee-ya resident. I understand you can go to jail for not carrying your vehicle registration with you. Talk about fasict regimes! You dont have it ? These days everything is on computers. Now if you stole the vehicle? Tsk tsk.... Regardless, I think, too, there is more to this drama then meets the eye.

Wow, thats interesting maybe dude just has some sort of mental problem the smell alone should have made him call someone anyone. The he might been a weirdo into N___phila as sick as it might be.
Olga April 29, 2011 at 02:35 AM
"Religion has taken our of schools?" Where'd you take English 101? If anything religion is being faught OUT of the classroom - more than ever before - unless your child is enrolled into a religious school!

Olga April 29, 2011 at 02:36 AM
Then to a-jail he shall be a-going!
virka April 29, 2011 at 02:37 AM
Olga, re-read the posts. We stated that religion has been taken out of schols. I have to agree with you on a very good point you made as far as this guy keeping the body for monetary reasons. Maybe he wanted to continue to collect on her Social Security if she was getting that or welfare or what other income. We don't know much but it is all a possibility.
virka April 29, 2011 at 02:50 AM
I agree with the Captain. Love is forever is a very very sick person and more than likely dangerous.

Julie-- I am apologizing for Olga. Apparently she got over excited about a simple typo. Who knows, maybe on her keyboard the 'r' isn't right next to the 't' and if it is - she's never accidentally hit the wrong one. The funny thing is that in her self-righteousness she decided to be snarky and mean, but in the process she both misquoted and then totally misread your comment. I'd say the Bard's 'Me thinks she doth protest too much' is appropriate here. I agree with your point - when prayer and religion - specifically Christianity - were removed from schools our youth lost their moral bearing. But I think most people don't know that what is taught as a replacement - secular humanism - is also defined by our Supreme Court as a religion. The difference is that one teaches absolute moral values and the other teaches moral relativism and you know where that's lead our society - to drug dealers living with corpses. What has been taught in our schools for many years is Cultural Marxism. If you're interested check it out @ http://www.culturalmarxism.org or view the videos @ http://www.youtube.com/user/biledemon3 Again - Sorry about Olga's rude reply. Since English is so important to her maybe she's willing to google adult ed classes. I understand that both English and Social Etiquitte are readily available in most areas.

God only knows what this guy was up to , but time will tell , sure there is more to this fishee story - you pretty much hit it right on the head about CA Olga , Lived in San Diergo for 5 years and my God that state has a huge fine toting law for just about everything imaginable outside of breathing and I am sure that stare is working on that .

Well there are some advantages in being a necrophiliac. You don't always have to look your best or be concerned about bad breath. No arguments about who has control of the remote and putting down the toilet seat to say nothing about who has to take out the garbage. I knew someone that lived with his dead wife for three weeks and didn't know it. Sex was the same he said, but his clue was dishes began to fill up the sink.
