Santa Cruz Police Promote Veteran to Sergeant

Job goes to 11-year veteran, who will start on patrol immediately

Arnold Vasquez, an 11-year veteran, has been promoted this week to sergeant.  During his career,  he has worked assignments that included patrol, investigations, and gangs and has been a training officer

Vasquez, 37,  is now the school resource officer in Santa Cruz City Schools. Fluent in Spanish, he is also an expert on Central Coast gangs.  He has spent a great deal of his career working with “at-risk” youth.  Sergeant Vasquez also worked as the lead investigator in several gang-related homicide cases.

Vasquez was born and raised in El Paso, Texas, moving to Santa Cruz in May, 2000. During his off time, Vasquez volunteers in the community and coaches youth sports.

"Sergeant Vasquez exemplifies the skills, character and commitment of a respected leader in our organization," said Chief Kevin Vogel. "I am confident he will play an important role as we shape the future of the police department.”

Vasquez said he was very excited about this promotion and looking forward to the challenges and rewards ahead.

Sergeant Vasquez's promotion takes effect immediately and he will begin his new assignment supervising a patrol team.
