Santa Cruz Police Searching for Armed Assault Suspect

A Santa Cruz police officer saw the suspect pistol-whip a man during a fight in front of a bar Thursday night.

Santa Cruz police are searching for a suspect who allegedly pistol-whipped another man during a fight in front of a bar Thursday night. An officer spotted the suspect and another man involved in a fight Thursday around 10:40 p.m. in front of the Catalyst Bar at 1011 Pacific Avenue, according to Lt. Warren Barry.

The officer saw the suspect pull out a semi-automatic pistol and begin to strike the victim in the head, before he pointed the gun at the victim, Barry said. The officer yelled and drew her gun, at which point the suspect fled the scene, running south on Pacific Avenue and on to Elm Street.

Police searched the area with the help of a police dog, and located the suspect's hat and sweatshirt. The gun was found under a parked car in a public lot at Cedar and Elm streets. The suspect was not located. He is described as a black male adult, 20 to 25 years old, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, with black hair and a stocky build. He was last seen wearing a white dress shirt with blue and red stripes and blue jeans.

The victim, who sustained multiple cuts to the head, refused medical treatment and is not cooperating with police. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Santa Cruz police at (831) 420-5820.
