SCPD Arrests 83 for Domestic Violence in 12 Months

Sgt. Steve Carney calls domestic violence "a huge and hidden problem."

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and to keep the public in the loop regarding the issue, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office has released domestic abuse arrest numbers from the last 12 months.

Domestic Violence "can include physical, sexual, psychological and economic abuse, and is perpetrated by one person against their intimate partner. Domestic violence can also be perpetrated by and/or against a member of the same family or household," Sgt. Steve Carney said in a prepared statement.

Carney called domestic violence "a huge and largely hidden problem," that occurs every 15 seconds nationwide.

From September 2011 through September 2012, there were 3,289 total domestic violence 911 calls in Santa Cruz County resulting in 331 arrests and 356 arrest warrants. In Santa Cruz, 995 calls resulted in 83 arrests and 91 arrest warrants issued. See the full number breakdown below.
