Second Suspect in Home Invasion Robbery Surrenders to Police

Esteban Lopez is one of the two men who allegedly broke into a home and tried to tie up a husband and wife. The couple subdued the attackers, but Lopez ran away.

A man who ran away after a husband and wife fought back a home invasion Feb. 20, surrendered to Santa Cruz Police Tuesday morning.

Esteban Lopez, 22, turned himself in at Santa Cruz Police headquarters at 7:15 a.m. He was wanted on a $250,000 bond for charges of robbery, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon and burglary.

Lopez and Cuactemoc Xilonzochilt-Zamora, 28, of Santa Cruz, entered a house on the 500 block of Poplar Street at 4:25 a.m. and woke a sleeping couple. The two men reportedly threatened the couple with a sword and a screw driver, both belonging to the couple.

The victims said the two men then tried to tie them up with duct tape and threatened to harm their sleeping children if the parents didn't turn over some money.

The couple then fought back, subduing Xilonzochilt-Zamora on the front yard. One of the children called police, who arrested him there. They searched for the second man but couldn't find him.
