Shots Fired Monday Night at Foursome Walking on Third Street

Woman, 20, shot in the arm.

A 20-year-old woman was shot in the upper arm Monday night as she walked with three friends on Third Street, according to police.

The Santa Cruz Police Department was called at 7:45 p.m. to the area of Third and Raymond streets where a group of four -- two males and two females between the ages of 14 and 20 -- said they were walking when someone began shooting at them from the San Lorenzo River levee above.

The group told officers they heard someone whistle to attract their attention, and looked up and saw two Hispanic male adults on the levee calling out and gesturing to them -- when one started shooting, police said.

The four ran towards Riverside Avenue as the suspect was shooting, and one in the group -- a 20-year-old female from San Jose -- was struck in the upper arm as she fled on foot, police said.

The suspects were last seen running away from the levee area, police said.

The female's injuries were non-life threatening injuries and she was driven by ambulance to a Santa Clara County hospital, police said.

No one else was injured during the attack.

Police closed the area for an in-depth evidence search and canvassed the neighborhood for potential witnesses.

Investigators are in the process of developing a motive and continuing the investigation.

Any witnesses are advised to call the Police Department’s Investigation’s Unit at 831 420-5820.
