Street Fight Lands Two in Hospital

Santa Cruz Police are investigating the fight which they believe may involve criminal street gangs.

Police in Santa Cruz are investigating a report of a large fight between possible criminal street gangs that broke out Saturday in the area of Leibrandt Avenue and Raymond Street.

By the time officers arrived at the scene all parties had left the area.

However, witnesses told the officers that a gold-colored Honda vehicle was seen leaving the area soon after the fight. Witnesses said the car had severe body damage and that one of the passengers was covered in blood.

During their investigation, officers found an area on Raymond Street with blood in the roadway.

A short time later, according to police, the Honda pulled into a gas station in nearby Capitola where the occupants asked for medical assistance. The car reportedly had broken windows and flat tires.

Emergency Medical Service personnel arrived at the scene along with Capitola Police.

The car’s two occupants were taken to Dominican Hospital where one of them was treated for a stab wound to the leg and torso. The other person had been hit by a baseball bat and was treated for a contusion to the head and missing teeth. Police said the injuries don’t appear to be life threatening.

Santa Cruz Police said it appears that the parties involved are affiliated with criminal street gangs. However, descriptions of the others involved in the attack are limited. Santa Cruz Police Investigations and the Santa Cruz County Gang Task Force are following up on the case.

Police are asking that anyone who witnessed the event to call the Investigations section at 831-420-5820. Anonymous calls regarding the incident can be made at 831-420-5995.
