Unnamed Santa Cruz Man Dies in Gilroy Crash

Gilroy Police are looking for information about the crash.

A Santa Cruz man was killed in a car crash in Gilroy this morning, police said.

  Officers responded to a report of a solo car crash in the 1700  block of state Highway 152 at about 2:25 a.m., according to police.

  Crews determined that the car had crashed into a tree, killing the lone occupant of the car, a 34-year-old man from Santa Cruz, whose name has not yet been released, police said.

  When the car hit the tree, it ignited a fire underneath the car, but it was quickly extinguished by first responders, according to police.

  An investigation determined that the car involved may have been the same car associated with reports of a hit-and-run with parked cars in the area of First and Hanna streets.

  The fatal crash is being investigated. It is unknown if the driver was impaired at the time of the crash, police said.
