City Council Preview: Downtown Dogs and Motel Improvement

A look at a couple of the highlights on the agenda for Tuesday's joint City Council-Redevelopment Agency meeting.

Starting , pups will be allowed to stride down Pacific Avenue. But a Santa Cruz City Council vote Tuesday may add more rules for downtown dog walkers.

At a 3 p.m. Tuesday joint City Council-Redevelopment Agency meeting at 809 Center St., the council will vote to amend Ordinance No. 2011-08, or the “Trial Suspension of the Prohibition of Dogs in Downtown Santa Cruz.”

Under the revised ordinance, dogs would need to be on a leash and be no more than 3 feet away from their owners. Groups of three or more dogs would be prohibited. The dogs would also have to display collared tags stating that they are currently vaccinated and licensed.

At the proceeding Redevelopment Agency meeting at 7 p.m., the council will vote on a “Motel Improvement Pilot Program” (MIPP). The MIPP will award grants to local Beach Area hotels to refurbish their buildings, with the aim of boosting tourism.

To qualify, properties will need to be motels or hotels not built within the last 10 years, owned by the participant, and located in the range of Beach Hill and Beach Flats neighborhood or portions of the Lower Ocean neighborhood.

If selected for the MIPP, they will receive a $100,000 reimbursement grant to make improvements to the exterior of the buildings, such as fixing light structures and coating display windows with anti-graffiti film.
