County to Consider Gun Store Moratorium Tuesday

A proposal for the unincorporated county's first gun shop has the Board of Supervisors taking action Tuesday.

Prompted by the proposed opening of a gun shop in Live Oak, the Santa Cruz Board of Supervisors will consider a temporary moratorium on gun shops Tuesday at 10:15 a.m.

Supervisor Jon Leopold has proposed stopping any approvals of the shop until the county has had time to study make recommendations for permitting gun shops.

"With national attention focused on the issue of gun violence and regulations, it is timely that our county also thoughtfully establish sound policies," all five supervisors – Leopold, Zach Friend, Neal Coonerty, Greg Caput and Bruce McPherson – wrote in an email to constituents.

They invited members of the public to speak on the issue. If people can't make the work-hours meeting, they may phone (831) 454-2200 or email the supervisors with opinions.

The meeting is held on the fifth floor of the County Administration Building, 701 Ocean St.
