Democratic Party Leader to Seek City Council Seat

Richelle Noyoran, the outgoing chair of the Santa Cruz County Democratic Party, announced Tuesday she's running for city council.

A high-profile local Democrat has thrown her hat into the November 6 race for a Santa Cruz City Council seat.

Richelle Noyoran, chairwoman of the Santa Cruz County Democratic Party, announced today she'll be seeking a spot on the council for the first time, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Noyoran was elected to her current position in July 2011. At the time of her election, group spokeswoman Deborah Luhrman Noyoran has "a lot of political experience."

Previously, she had served as the county party chairwoman in 2004 and chaired the California Democratic Party for four years.

She'll be leaving her current chairwomanship this month, the Sentinel reported.

In addition to her political work, Noyoran is also the vice chair of the Transportation and Public Works Commission. According to the Sentinel, her day job is a marketing consultant.

Noyoran is just the latest Santa Cruzan to file to run. Cynthia Mathews, a five-time councilwoman and three-time mayor, she would be seeking a council seat this year.
