Desal Rally at City Hall Today

The Right to Vote on Desal Coalition will gather at 12:45 p.m. to hand over 8,800 signatures petitioning the government to allow citizens to have the final say on the plant.

Members of the Right to Vote on Desal (RTVOD) Coalition plan to rally at today at 12:45 p.m. to hand 8,800 signatures over to city officials for processing, according to a press release sent out by the group.

The signatures have been gathered in an effort to guarantee that the citizenry has the final say on whether is built, said Paul Gratz, a member of RTVOD.

"If we qualify today, it will put this right to vote on the November ballot," he said. "It's not for or against the plant, but it means that in November, voters will be able to vote yes or no on the right to vote for the plant."

If the right to vote prevails, the Santa Cruz City Council must put the plant to a citizen vote before they can build, Gratz added.

Members of the RTVOD Coalition include Santa Cruz Alternatives, the Save the Waves Coalition, the Sierra Club, Surfers' Environmental Alliance, the and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.

According to the press release, RTVOD collected the 8,800 signatures in less than 120 days.
