Gerard Butler Talks About His Surfing Accident at Mavericks

No mention of the people who pulled him out of the water or the use of illegal jet skis.

Gerard Butler seems cavalier in this interview, but anyone who has been held under can relate to the panic he felt being held down by some of the biggest waves on earth.

Butler was filming "Of Men and Mavericks," the story of Santa Cruz surfer Jay Moriarity and his older mentor, Rick "Frosty" Hesson, played by Butler.

The jet ski riding lifeguards charged with protecting the actors have been ticketed by enforcement officers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which has made the personal water craft illegal in the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. Boats with the same engines are allowed, however, but are not as good at saving lives.
