Kelp, Human and Animal Feces and Leaks in Private Sewers are Polluting Cowell's Beach

The city council will hear a report and take action on cleaning up one of the most popular and badly polluted beaches in the state.

The Santa Cruz City Council will discuss Tuesday evening what to do about heavy levels of pollution at Cowell's Beach, the city's gem alongside the Municipal Pier, where children have learned to surf for decades.

The city has taken steps, such as replacing its sewer mains, but now can make efforts to help fix private sewers and drains running to the ocean. It can also isolate Neary Lagoon's runoff, which contains bacteria from animals, according to a report to be heard at 7 p.m.

Human waste has been detected, as has high concentrations of animal feces.
