Politics & Government

Q&A: David Terrazas

Santa Cruz City Council candidate.

What is the primary reason you are running for this office? To bring experience and fresh, positive energy to city government as we are facing significant community challenges which require new leadership, new perspective and a focus on long-term solutions.

What will be your single most important priority if you get elected?
Increasing public safety and making our neighborhoods safe and vibrant.

What sets you apart from the other candidates? I've successfully organized neighborhoods in my community to improve our town and have taken leadership positions to work with local government to address critical needs. I was the first resident to personally leverage a modest RDA grant, with support from local businesses and residents, to implement a public art mural. The finished project eliminated the need for costly graffiti abatement and improved the overall ambiance of a local commercial district. Additionally, as a result of recent criminal violence, I personally created a public-safety door hanger and partnered with Santa Cruz Neighbors for city-wide distribution to combat gang violence. I am focused on identifying effective, low-cost solutions to improve public safety and to increase economic activity in Santa Cruz. Furthermore, prior service as chair of the City Public Works Commission and chair of the City Transportation Commission have also provided me with strong working relationships with city staff and an understanding of the city's budget process. Professionally, I earned an M.B.A. and Law Degree while working full-time in private and public sector management positions. I have deep experience in addressing the unique challenges of working within complex organizations.
