Santa Cruz Celebrates Climate Action Plan at Noon

Santa Cruz announces its plans to increase solar power, bike paths, tree planting and partnership with UCSC for green tech.

At noon Monday the City of Santa Cruz released its plan to increase its use of green energy, which can be read here.

Mayor Ryan Coonerty is hosting a kick-off from noon to 1 p.m. with a ceremonial "Climate Tree" planting.

Among the steps taken, the city will launch a program to increase the number of solar users from 500 to 1,000 by 2012 and 5,000 in 2020.

It will formalize a city office to reduce municipal building energy use by 40 percdent and it will partner with UCSC on 25 sustainability and alternative energy research projects.

“I am proud of our Climate Action Plan. It continues Santa Cruz' tradition of being a leader in environmental responsibility,” said Santa Cruz Mayor Ryan Coonerty. “The actions identified in the
Plan—many of them easy to implement—will reduce our carbon footprint, save money and bring green business and good jobs to the community.”
