Santa Cruz Police Step Up Enforcement for New Year's Weekend, Starting Saturday

As with the Fourth of July and Halloween, Santa Cruz Police will triple fines Saturday until Tuesday morning at 5 a.m.

First the good news: There will be a New Year's Eve countdown at the Town Clock starting Monday at 11:40 p.m. that will include a DJ, fireworks and a light show.

Now the harsh realities: roads will be closed around the Town Clock at 10:30 p.m. until 12:45 a.m. Knight Street, just behind the clock, closes at 8 a.m. Monday.

Enhanced fines that can go higher than $1,000 for some offenses begin Saturday at 5 p.m.
