  • 1. New Workshops: Santa Cruz Sentinel Community Media Lab and Independent Students for A Progressive Society

The Santa Cruz Sentinel Community Media Lab is a group of local bloggers whose posts are promoted on the Sentinel’s website. They cover a wide range of topics: local food, parenting, alternative lifestyles, even local civic issues. The Community Media Lab is looking for a fresh way to present these front-line reports from the community and has started a Civinomics workshop with the intent of gathering  feedback from local bloggers and viewers alike. Interested in weighing in on this elaborate experiment in the future of media? Visit Improving The Community Media Lab.

A new student civic organization, Independent Students for a Progressive Society, is looking for input about what campaigns it should run. Recently formed by UCSC grad Mark Russo, ISPS is  dedicated “to encouraging non-partisan political discussion amongst students and youth in a legitimate fashion.” Their pet topics include the causes of political apathy among students, a proposed state privacy law and Gov. Jerry Brown's plans for realignment. Visit the Independent Students for A Progressive Societyworkshop to learn more.

Ever had something stolen or had your house broken into here in Santa Cruz? Tell us about it! As part of our continuing workshop on property crime in Santa Cruz, we want to hear about people's experiences so we can have a more informed discussion. Once we've collected some good ideas and stories, we'll be sharing them with our local elected officials and with the recently appointed Task Force on Public Safety during public comments. Share your tale at Reducing Property Crime in Santa Cruz.

    3. New Features And Bug Fixes

Since the last newsletter, we’ve continued squashing bugs left and right. Word is getting around that a code bug ain’t safe in these parts. They tremble at the sound of our name.

Coming up soon—as early as next week:

—Tell Your Rep. This feature will allow Civinomics members to alert their elected officials when a workshop of interest is happening.
    —Facebook Connect Bug Fixes

And from our stats board comes this interesting little nugget: Out of 1,794 votes cast so far on 810 ideas, comments and posted resources, 1,523 of those have been upvotes. Only 271 got the thumbs-down. A comment on the Civinomics community's collective brilliance? Proof of excessive politeness? You decide.

    4. Updates from the Gov 2.0 Space

If you haven’t seen it yet, Craigslist.org founder Craig Newmark has created an organization geared toward promoting the intersection of technology and social causes.  Launched in 2011, Craigconnects has already partnered with many other groups to address such topics as “Back to Basics Journalism," “Consumer Protection” and “Open Government." That's all for now. Thanks for reading, and have a great week!
