Is School Closed on Presidents' Day in Santa Cruz?

Monday is a national holiday. Here's a rundown of what's open, what's closed and where the sales are.

Monday is Presidents' Day, which means kids get a three-day weekend and some grownups have the day off work.

Schools in Santa Cruz are closed Monday; some districts even took Friday off.

Also closed Monday? City and county offices, the courts, the post office, libraries (including at UC Santa Cruz) and banks.

METRO buses will operate on regular weekday schedules, with the exception of the Highway 17 Express, which will be on its weekend schedule. School bus routes won't be operating but METRO ParaCruz will be running.

So what can you do?

Presidents Day began as a day of remembrance in 1800, the year after President George Washington died. It was observed on Feb. 22, Washington's birthday. The holiday was shifted to the third Monday of February about 50 years ago. Eventually, it was combined with the observance of President Abraham Lincoln's birthday (Feb. 12) and renamed Presidents' Day.

Three-day weekend sales and Presidents' Day deals started cropping up in the 1980s.

This weekend, bargain-hunters can find sales at the Capitola Mall, including Macy's, Sears and Kohl's. The big Patagonia clearance sale is happening at the outlet store on River Street.

I like the sound of James' new music and believe he has shown significant growth between his debutRead More album and his second. But to say he was "the real winner of his season of 'American Idol'" is disingenuous. He faltered down the stretch compared to the other finalists.

He is such an attractive and lovely young man, tho I am old enough to be his grandmother I stillRead More feel so passionate about James Durbin and his sexy hair and rock music. Makes me feel young again!

This show was exceptional, James is a natural on stage and shines with the brightest stars. I amRead More proud to say I was hooked and reeled in from the first notes sang during Idol auditions. As a life long lover of a variety of music I can safely say I see nothing but great things in this young man's future. He had me first as a singer, soon thereafter as a performer and now as James DURBIN, singer, song writer, performer and artist. He continues to grow and push himself toward stardom and I am proud to be Right Behind him all the way.
