The Monterey County District Attorney's Office is considering filing charges against an elementary teacher who allegedly slapped an 8-year-old child during a class on Monday, Salinas police said today.

Police were notified at 9:20 a.m. on Monday that a teacher slapped the student while a morning class was in session at Alisal Community School, according to police Cmdr. Henry Gomez.

Officers submitted a case in favor of a warrant for the teacher's arrest to the District Attorney's office, Gomez said.

John Ramirez, superintendent of the Alisal Union School District, which oversees the K-6 Alisal school in Salinas, declined comment except that "we have a teacher on paid administrative leave pending an investigation."

A spokesman for the District Attorney's office in Salinas could not be reached.
