BASEBALL: Santa Cruz Rallies to Defeat Scotts Valley

Cardinals comeback to win in extra innings; win first league game of season.

Wet weather has hit the Bay Area hard over the past few weeks.

With games getting rained out left and right, the Santa Cruz and Scotts Valley High baseball teams snuck in a Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League matchup before the rain really started coming down Tuesday afternoon at Scotts Valley High.

The rain started up around the fifth inning, just about the same time Santa Cruz began its comeback.

Santa Cruz scored two runs in the fifth and another two runs in extra innings en route to a 4-2 victory over Scotts Valley in eight innings.

Santa Cruz improves to 1-2 in SCCAL play and is now 3-6 overall.

The Falcons are still searching for their first win in league action and are now 3-5-1 overall and 0-2 in league.

Scotts Valley scored runs in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead early. Sophomore second baseman Abe Alvarez singled and later scored to kick off the game’s scoring in the first.

Lefty starter Jake Duncan pitched strong early, mixing speeds and locations nicely on the bump for the host team.

Santa Cruz evened the score up at two in the fifth, sparked by a two-out rally. The Cardinals eventually took the lead in extra innings, scoring twice in the top half of the eighth inning as the rain really began to fall.

Under some tough conditions, the visitors stayed aggressive on the base paths and pushed in two key scores. Senior Dylan Mori and senior outfielder Erik Colombini each touched home in the final inning of play.

More rain is slated to hit the region over the next few days and into the weekend. Santa Cruz is slated to host rival Harbor High on Friday.

Scotts Valley will play at Soquel High also on Friday if there’s a break in the storm.
