BOYS BASKETBALL: Santa Cruz Advances into CCS Finals

Cardinals fly past Palma; Division IV championship on the line Friday against Sacred Heart Prep.

The Santa Cruz High boys basketball team already has one title in tow as the 2010-11 Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League regular season and tournament champions.

After a convincing 76-52 victory over Palma in the Central Coast Section Division IV Boys Basketball Playoffs Tuesday night, Santa Cruz is only one win away from grabbing hold of an even bigger honor.

Being crowned a section champion.

The CCS D-IV title will be on the line Friday afternoon as the No. 2 seed Cardinals of Santa Cruz (22-6) will duke it out with No. 1 seed Sacred Heart Prep-Atherton (24-2) at Santa Clara University.

Tip-off is scheduled for 4:45 pm.

The relentless full court pressure from the Cardinals overwhelmed Palma and led to several transition scores for the favorite. The semis were held in the brand-new gym on the campus of Menlo School in Atherton.

Smooth shooter Keith Williams led the Cardinals with 16 points. Clayton Conroy added 14 points and Zen Maki had 10.

Santa Cruz has now won nine straight games heading into championship Friday. The Cardinals also clinched a spot in the NorCal tournament that begins play next week with the win over Palma.
