PHOTOS: Mavericks Invitational Festival Closes Contest Window

Photos from the Mavericks Invitational Festival in Half Moon Bay.

A little rain in the morning delayed the start of the Mavericks Invitational Festival, but it didn't dampen the spirits. Good music and great stories from Mavericks surfers Jeff Clark, Rick "Frosty" Hesson, Savannah Shaughnessy, Darryl "Flea" Virostko and Greg Long entertained the audience at this first event.

We checked it out and peeked through the fence several times, but $35 seemed pretty steep for what was offered. I hear there was funding for the event, good thing because from the size of the number of people, I doubt they would have made expenses. All told, it must have cost a fortune. It is a wonder that someone okeyd taking over the parking lot of a facility whose permit specified "visitor serving" for a private event.

Who funded it? I heard it was a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Coastside on TV last night. I wonder how much money was raised?

I don't know for sure, but heard it was someone who backs some local business. You are right about some of the revenue going to the Boys and Girls Club.
