'Family Fun Day' at Evergreen Cemetery Saturday

It's not a place you might think of for a fun time, but nothing the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History does fits the stereotypes.

It sounds like a contradiction in terms: Saturday will be 'Family Fun Day' at Evergreen Cemetery from 1-3 p.m.

Geared toward celebrating the city's history, the celebration of the 1850s Protestant cemetery will include Victorian era games, hoop rolling, gravestone rubbing, jacks, hopscotch and scavenger hunts.

There will be music by Steve Bare and pioneer stories provided by the Santa Cruz Public Library, followed by an ice cream social with Polar Bear Ice Cream.

Evergreen Cemetery is located on Evergreen Street by Harvey West Park and the event is free.

The cemetery also has an annual Halloween program.

We had a lot of fun doing gravestone rubbings and exploring around. Thank you!

Yes, that's the marker on the Chinese section of Evergreen Historic Cemetery in Santa Cruz! I translated all the Chinese headstones found, back in March of 1988 as a class project for Mr. Sandy Lydon's History of Santa Cruz class offered at Cabrillo College. Well, twenty years later, found a folder with copy of part of the work that I did at the MAH Archive. Will try to post it here, I already scanned the work in. Was told that the quality is not clear enough to read the hand written characters...there were no internet access back then from home...although my first computer class was taken at Cabrillo College back in 1975 when there was a Winter Intersession.....
