Photo of the Day: Rude Tourists Can Leave

The Santa Cruz Diner takes a stand against pushy tourists.

You have to love a business that tells it like it is.

This sign is on the door of the Santa Cruz Diner....directing pushy tourists down the street to Denny's.

I love it.

What do you think and what other businesses should follow this model?

Should the Boardwalk direct gangbangers south to Disneyland?

Should Starbucks send tourists who just come in to use the bathroom to McDonald's?

Love this!

This is the height of arrogance on the part of the owner. Just because he and his staff can't reasonably handle the influx of business does not mean that he should lecture potential customers. How does he know who is a tourist? We are all tourists at some time. Unbelievable. I wonder what his normal business is like. Insulting customers is not the way to grow a prosperous business. He probably already knows that. He has a terrible attitude. Businesses depend upon money from their customers. After all, who's paying whom?

What I take exception to is the inference that the "rude" customers are from out of town! We've lived in this area for 15 years and, believe me, there are PLENTY of rude locals!! Some people - tourists OR locals - might just be antagonized by that sign, and walk in anyway just LOOKING for trouble. That said, my husband and I are exceptionally nice to servers in restaurants because we know they have a stressful, poor-paying job. But, if I were from out of town, stopped for a bite at the Santa Cruz Diner, and saw that sign in the window, I would say "Screw you!! I'll find another place to eat where the employees don't have a defensive attitude BEFORE I even walk in the door!!" I believe the manager/employees of Santa Cruz Diner absolutely have the right to refuse service to rude customers, or ask them to leave. But, jeez people! Wait til they do something wrong BEFORE you jump on them!!

Interesting perspectives on both sides here. I think they were just being a bit light-hearted, like the rest of the signs in the place. Or maybe had an influx of rude customers.

I was at SC Diner a couple weeks ago, ordered their Pho which is a HUGE bowl of broth/veggies/chicken and they REFUSED to give me even a large soda cup to take the rest home!! Talk about rude. I'm sure ol Denny's down the street would have pooped with at least a cup/lid. I think they have been watching too many Soup Nazi episodes on Sienfeld and think this cr*p is cool. I'm not going back...meh

Maybe they assume the rude customers are tourists because locals know better than to eat there? They should have insulted rude people in general rather than singling out the tourists.

Me too,,, I fish main beach and Seabright at 0-dark early and it looks like a trash bomb went off (tie here between the tourists and the seaguls). Makes we wonder if a sign like this would be possible for every entrance to a beach ... "if you insist on being a lazy slob - please don't visit us for a while OK" I actually politely confronted 8 "guests" on 26th beach - asking if they needed one of my bags to pack up the debris they were aparently leaving - also offered to help them take it up, but got look from them that i had better let it go. Fortunately two locals took the initiative and just bagged it and we got it up to the trash successfully - which was awesome. So how about a sign for beachgoing "Visitors"----

Ed: Nice job. We should find a way to ban people like that.

I agree that there are rude people everywhere, and we are all tourists! On the beach comment: I think we should charge to use the main beach to help pay for the clean up! What a mess. Never ever would it occur to me that I should just toss my garbage on the beach (or anywhere) and think someone else is going to come behind me to pick it up. How about liter laws for all beach users. Ok, off the topic I know. I was thinking the morning about starting a blog on bad customer behavior... now I am more inspired... We are centrally located and frequently have car loads of people come in to use ( and trash) our bathroom. Due to unconscious people abusing the facility, we have put up a note that we can’t provide public toilets, Sad..

It says right on the menu that you can't take the Pho to go and that they won't give you a cup to take it home in. It's a weird policy, I agree, but they do make it pretty clear what the policy is.

there the best deal in town for fresh vietnamese spring rolls, but there usually sold out. Most restaurants in santa cruz suck, they hire and fire for fun and giggles, they pay shit wages and treat there people like shit. In return these restaurants have crappy food and crappy service, you get what you pay for and that goes for employees. Even so some restaurants have a good product and good atmosphere to work in, and there able to keep good local employees for a long time. Also the best bene's and pay in the coffee business is peets and starbucks, and they tend to have the best service and least head trip drama bs. a lot of the local coffee shops are just a cover for politics and head trips on the part of the owners that arent in business to make money just have power trips on there employees and customers.
Mary Smith July 03, 2012 at 05:46 PM
I don't uderstand this at all. If I pay for a meal - it's MINE! If I don't finish my food, it's mine to take home. I've NEVER been to a restaurant that wouldn't allow me to take home leftovers! Are they just too cheap to provide a take-home container?? You know ... we've never been too thrilled with Santa Cruz Diner. This might just be the last straw. I think next time we want quick 'n crappy food, we'll just go down the street to Denny's!

Aside from the fact that you used profanity which is inappropriate and offensive, you need to learn how to spell and use proper grammar! It's "they're" or "their" NOT "there" Sorry, but I find ignorance of our language really annoying!!!
