I greet every person that boards my bus. It sets the tone for positivity and makes people feel welcomed and comfortable. Something I have come to notice when someone does not reciprocate my greeting with a verbal response or a smile, is they end up having trouble with the farebox. This could just be mere happenstance, but the frequency with which it happens is something to consider.
The thing about entering the bus is that it is very similar to entering a room full of people; All eyes on you! When your money is rejected by the farebox, it makes a loud alarming sound and then you have to figure out what is so wrong with your money that the farebox didn't want it. While you are figuring this out, people are "patiently" waiting and watching.
I call moments like this "A Brief Exchange of Karma". If you're impolite to your driver, the farebox will be impolite to you. Replying with a hello or a smile can do wonders for your energy throughout the day and it could potentially save you a little farebox embarrassment.
